another scene idea! [04 Nov 2004|09:27pm]

musikdork228
[ mood | creative ]

hi, i just had an idea for a scene outline. i dont know what a lot of those dialogue topics mean, but let's pretend i do and take 'free will vs fate.'

CAR OWNER IN MIDDLE SEAT = A
OTHER PERSON IN MIDDLE SEAT = B
PERSON IN PASSENGER SEAT = C

there's two people in the middle seat. one is the owner of the car(A), but he's letting someone else drive(the switch could be a link. and maybe pulling over to pee? just an idea).

so these two, A and B, start this conversation all about free will vs fate, and it turns into a debate. near the beginning of this debate, the person in the passenger seat(C) finds the CB radio in the glovebox, and interrupts the argument to ask A, "hey does this thing work." A responds, "yeah, man, if you can figure out how to hook it up, go nuts." and then he continues his debate.

we keep showing the debate with insert shots of C hooking up the CB radio. he gets to a certain point, and then interrupts the debate again to ask how to turn the cb on. A tells him, then continues the debate. the debate is nearing argument.

finally, C has the CB radio on. he turns around once more to ask, "hey, so how do you talk to people on this thing?" A, exasperated, leans forward, flicks it to a channel, and asks if anyone is out there. a redneck trucker comes on, and A asks him the key question of the debate he was having with B. the trucker responds with the exact, well-worded argument that B was saying.

shot of B with an "i told you so" look. shot of A with a look of disbelief on his face. "over and out," he says. then sits back, defeated.

this may be confusing-- and even if you get it, it may seem a little mainstream, but i think it could be both really insightful and really funny if we pull it off right.

like it? dont like it? questions?

Goin' over the top [30 Oct 2004|01:34pm]

[ mood | okay ]

Ok, so we're doin' the idea about one car with links and segments, in case ya didn't know. Man, lost a little momentum, but that's ok, 'cus we're shiftin' into second gear.

So we gotta start on the next step. The way I see it, we need to decide on which topics/events we're going to use. So for the next week (or more/less, I dunno, we'll see), If you have ideas for segments, write 'em out in the journal. When everybody's got their ideas out there, we'll decide on 10-15 (assuming we get a crapload of ideas - which I hope we will) to actually write up in first draft form.

Keep in mind that at this point we don't have concrete characters - with the write-ups, I'm thinking or more just a general direction for that segment. After we have some to chose from and can kinda see what the scene is going to be like, we'll pare the 10-15 down to 7 or 8. And, I dunno about the process for creating characters yet, but I think people's personalities will grow from what segment they're involved with. But yeah, if you have ideas for character traits, wouldn't be a bad idea to write that out either.

So yeah, ideas for segments that we've got so far...which I think have already been listed, but still.

-Making Out
-Sharing Music
-CB Radio (used with another topic)
-Vocal Jam
-What Happens when you die
-Free will vs. fate
-Politics
-Dreams
-Eternity
-Individual vs. Social Influence

So yeah, if you had one I couldn't remember/couldn't find, comment and I'll edit the list. And if you have a new one, post it.

i just heard the saddest news i've heard in a long time.

they're closing the wallenburg shell.

forever.

i am so depressed.

could we shoot something (read: anything) there sometime soon? i dunno exactly when it's closing, but i plan to go up there tomorrow morning, early (read: sometime after 11am) and take tons and millions of pictures of it. i've recently had some amazing times there. it's one of my newly favorite places on earth, but soon, it will be gone.

forever.

anyone up for shooting out there? i know you're busy this weekend brett...but...

forget it. i'll just take some shots for memory tomorrow.

forever is a long time you guys...

we'll have to have release forms for all actors, music, everything.

ok so i just wrote a scene. it's the scene i've been talking about, about sharing music with someone. i wrote it with nic and ashley in mind... but i'm sure it could be anyone. the band name could also change, it was just all i could come up with.. so..

check it outCollapse )

oh yeah, also..

EXT = exterior
INT = interior
CU = close-up
BEAT = a beat in time. a one-count or longer.

and everything in italics is direction.

please be honest.

just a couple of thoughts

1.) i think at the end of the movie we should all die in a fiery car crash.

... just kidding.

2.) but i think there should be a destination. some thoughts about the destination:
a.) it should be something really out of the ordinary, or mundane. they dont talk about it the whole time, but maybe that's the last shot.. whatever it is, it's them around it.
OR b.) they just never talk about the destination AND we never see it. we never know what it is. that would add to the universality of the whole thing. the last shot is, "we're there." and then an exterior shot of everyone getting out of the car, and then just hold on the empty car.

3.) i've been turning over in my head a scene where they're all meeting at someone's house, early morning style. like the beginning of most trips. but i think it would too mundane and we dont have enough time for it.

4.) i think one of the worst things we can do is to be derivative. when i come up with ideas, i just use similar moves in other movies to explain them. but i really dont wanna watch any movie and say, "we should do that move." unless it's an homage/parody, but i dont think we'll be doing that. i think all the ideas we use should be original.

5.) i think we have to remember that this has to be watchable. sure it can be meaningful and symbolic, but we just have to remember that we have to make a watchable, entertaining short film.

-edit-

6.) i wonder if ashley could be onto something with some couple making out.. or at least some of that discrete, under-the-blankets type stuff. maybe if only as a link..

ok, here's the deal.

the movies askew competition picks films each month. so i think we should do something as soon as possible, if only as practice, and send it in when we're done with it.

or, if we finish our current project earlier than projected, we can theoretically send it in every month while still working on other projects and sending them in.

basically, this is a call for other ideas that ARENT the road trip idea.

-Make it about one road trip, with a segment for each person in the car and links of other stuff in the middle

I'm down with that idea. It sounds like the best and most interesting way to package all of the ideas you're looking to include.

Anyway...I'm posting an idea for a scene. I, being hopelessly romantic, envision two characters falling in love in the backseat of the vehicle (not horizontally...although..).

So it'd be something like this:
Shot of one character looking longingly out the window at night while the other character glances over at him/her. That character looks away from the window to glance at the other. Their eyes meet breifly before the other character looks away, towards the front of the car.

This scene would come towards the beginning, as a setup for the rest of the film. Throughout the movie they flirt and whatnot: trying to sit near each other, talking about their favorite this and that, one character writes a poem for the other, whatever...

Finally, another night shot. A similar situation. An exchange of glances. The two characters are sitting next to each other, very close. There's a third person in the backseat, so they have to scrunch together. The two characters hold hands. A close up shot of the hands. They look at each other and smile.
Aaaaand more...
but that's the general idea.

I'd just like to see some romance.

Ok, there's been a crapload of commenting, and new ideas tossed back and forth, so here's the deal. If you have an idea for the direction of the film, post it as its own entry, before Saturday.

Saturday morning, I'm going to collect all the ideas and make a poll about which idea we should do. If it looks really spread out, like all the ideas have one or two votes, then I'll ask people to vote on their top two, and the two that make it out of that will be a new poll.

Just so ya know, here are the ideas so far - if I've missed one, comment, and I'll edit this post.

-Random Clips From Different people's road trips
-Still random clips, but used as symbols of people's lives and experiences
-Make it focus on the car going through its life, and road trip stuff happens during it
-Make it about two or three different trips going on at the same time, and cut between them
-Make it about one road trip, with a segment for each person in the car and links of other stuff in the middle

Have I mentioned that I'm as excited as all get out about this?

Links and Segments [21 Oct 2004|01:44am]

theribit
[ mood | relieved ]

Ok, it took a long time, but I do like Andy's idea now that I get it and realize that it won't ruin the things I already thought about. But yeah, I didn't get it at first, so here it is in detail for knuckleheads like me hehe.

Ok, so first off, there's just one car. There will be one segment for each person in the car, of varied topics - so 7 or 8 different conversational segments. Between each of the segments there'll be 'links', which range from simply watching the scenery, to chinese fire drills. Basically, most ideas that aren't conversational can be used as a link.

People can be in each other's segments, but the main character of the segment will be the focal point.

The only problem I really have with it anymore - and it's not a problem so much as an observation - is that, to me, if everything happens in the same car it's less about the universiality of road trips and more about this particular group of people. But I think I'm ok with that.

So yeah, I guess that's pretty much the same thing Andy said, I dunno why I didn't really get it before.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I thought of a couple new things. From now on, if it's conversation, I'll call it a segment idea, and if it's action or just random, it's a link.

Segment:
One person's segment is over CB radio with just some random person.

Links:
Getting pulled over is really short, just a siren and the Driver being like, "Fuck!"; Fade to black.
Sunrise/Sunset
Someone shouts, "Look, a DEER! (or whatever, some animal)."
Flying a Kite

OR.. or..

it's a van, or mini-van.. with like, four to seven people. and we do one short for each person.. they can all be in each of them, but one person is, like, the main character of each short.

and then links inbetween.

ya know how in pulp fiction, or go, you see certain people in each of the sections, and then later it comes back to them and they have a section all to their own? does that make sense?

i just had an idea that we do some dialogue-heavy scenes, and link them with short, instrumental scenes. like start with a scene, then everyone sleeping with instrumentals, then a scene, then light through the trees with instrumentals, etc..

i dont think it has to be a common theme, or a common car. of course, i'm not the director. :)
i think the 'road trip' theme is theme enough. in fact, i think it would be better if it were as many different people and scenes as possible. maybe the links can use people from previous/upcoming scenes. assuming we used that link idea.

let's get technical. what are using to shoot this? daylight and, what, a digital camera?

the good AND the bad [20 Oct 2004|11:02pm]

laylagirl88
[ mood | creative ]

just a little insight. i just got back from a road trip. i'll tell you what, a road trip's character, adventures, and episodes result much from who you go with. for instance. i went with the most talkative person ALIVE. she just never shut up, and she must've told me some of the same stories over and over again. even when i said, yeah you've told me that one before, she would say, no i haven't! and she'd start back at the beginning. at one point, i just looked over and her and snapped, OK IT'S QUIET TIME FOR A MINIMUM OF 10 MINUTES!!!!

haha. that was a fun moment.

believe it or not, there were also several awkward silences. on her part. she hates silence. i love it. so when she couldn't think of anything to say, she got visibly tense. this might've been comical from the point of view of an audience. but who knows.

also, your majesty mr. boss brett/fredo, i have a book about girly road trips that talks about road games to play, ways to use random things like condoms (i.e. a blow up pillow), marshmellows (adhesive press on nipples in case of emergency wet t-shirt contest), and water guns (emergency engine cooler-off-er). so that could be a fun book to look through.

i'd like to throw in a vote for the car's life idea. but um...would this not require having several versions of the same type car? just an obstacle i thought i'd throw out there.

on a completely different note, don't forget my/our idea to make my/our/whoever's dreams into movies. script and actors (for the most part) already figured out, setting and such taken care of, it's like a mental book that we just have to shoot pretty much. i'm excited to do some of those. and i do mean some.

so yeah! there's my two sense! i mean cents...i'll be back with more creativity after some sleep!!

Ok, I'm gonna put a bunch of ideas of stuff that I think would be cool for the film. Just ideas for scenes and stuff.

SCENES:
Chinese Fire Drill
Walkie Talkies
CB Radios with Truckers
Getting Lost
Everyone singing a song
Getting in a wreck
Getting pulled over for speeding
Running out of gas
Flat Tire
Food Fight between cars
One person left awake instrumental
Making out
Vocal Jams (Like, make instrument noises with your mouth...one person is each instrument)
Having truckers sound their horn
Conversations:
-What happens when you die
-Politics?
-Free Will vs. Fate
-Dreams
-The concept of eternity
-Individuality vs. Social Influence

SHOTS:
That one where the lane thingies are going by on the road
Light filtering through tree leaves (N. Parkway?)
From Driver's POV
Someone staring out the window
Everything going by as a blur
From above, all 4 doors open at once (For Chinese Fire Drill)
Rear view mirrors
Looking straight up out of a sunroof or convertible
From behind, everyone with their arms out the window like they're wings

IDEAS:
If we focus on the car, have card shots that say the mileage of the car instead of the date to seperate sections
Have some of the car interiors be really clean, some REALLY messy

Ok, I got a paid account so I could post polls - I think that's gonna come in handy. Plus I've wanted a paid account for a while.

Anyway, here's another issue - should we shoot in color or Black & White, and why?

I really don't have a preference, except to say I think B & W might be more forgiving of bad lighting.

Well, this is the inaugural post of Fredo Productions. Basically, this is gonna be a rundown of the current project and the short term and long term goals I have for it.

The current project is untitled, but the basic idea is this: small (1-5 minute) clips of driving experiences. The original idea was just road trips, and what happens on them, including cool stuff like walky talkies and chinese fire drills, up to conversations that people have, and just plain driving experiences that I feel most people have had and can relate to and just feel beautiful to me.

The next idea, which Mo had, was to give them all a theme. Originally, it was just going to be a hash of different clips that could all be taken by themselves, but Mo thought it would be cool if the episodes all represented some stage of life, or experiences people have. Thinking about it, I think it's a great idea. We need to have the other stuff, but this will tie everything together, and hopefully give the movie more of a message or something, I guess. I'm for giving it a try, anyway.

But I had another idea, which would take the film in a different direction. Instead of the clips being random, or representative of people's lives, the movie would actually be about the car. It would be shot in the same style, and lots of the same stuff would happen, but the focal point would be the car itself, being bought, going through various owners, and eventually being junked possibly, or something like that.

Personally, I like Mo's idea the most, but it's hard to let go of the one I had, 'cus I think it would make a good movie too. It would be possible to kinda put the ideas together, I think, but I'm afraid it would get too heavy-handed, or too obvious and blunt, because if I did that, then I think the owners would actually be the age they were trying to represent - they wouldn't really be symbols anymore, except of anything but themselves.

Or maybe we could flip flop it a little bit - like maybe the young kid takes really good care of it and the old guy is really reckless, but I can't think of a good reason except that it's less obvious.

So...this is where you guys come in...what do you think about the ideas? Do you have some of your own? Just let me know.

Oh yeah, goals. Ok, I'm gonna make a list of the general goals real quick.

1) Decide what exactly the movie is going to be about.

2) Discuss ideas for scenes and decide on which ones we're gonna use.

3) Write treatments for the different scenes - hopefully different people for each scene, but whatever.

4) Decide on a title.

5) Scout locations and figure out lighting and other technical stuff that we really have no idea how to do, whooo!

6) Shoot the actual scenes.

7) Write music for the movie (Clearing music is a little more than I think I can handle or afford at this point. Maybe I'll talk to some local bands like Snowglobe or other people on the makeshift label, but I dunno at this point if that's a realistic idea. And at any rate, I don't think I want to ask them until I can show them exactly what their music would be a part of.)

8) Edit the movie.

9) SCREENING PARTY! Booyah!

10) Send the movie to Movies Askew's monthly online shorts festival and hope it's picked to be included in their compilation DVD.

Oh yeah, number 10's what really inspired me to get on this. Kevin Smith is doing this thing where amateur filmmakers are having their movies made and voted on and possibly picked up by Miramax. For some reason, I think I have a chance. I dunno, either way, I'm really excited. And even if we don't win, I've been wanting to do this for over a year now, at least. Also, that's why the movie is going to have to be less than 30 minutes long - otherwise, it'll be disqualified.

So this is it. I'm really excited, I hope you guys are too. After we finish this project, we can go on to some of the other one's we've discussed...like, I guess I kinda feel like the boss at this point, but I really don't wanna be, I wanna work on EVERYONE's movie. But hehe, yeah, right now, I mostly wanna do mine. But I promise I'll help anyone that wants to do one after we get finished with this one. Or maybe during, but that could get confusing.

Ohhhh man. Who knows...this could be the start of something really big.
